Rosenallis

The burial ground to the rear of St Brigid’s, Rosenallis is full and no new burial plots are available. A comprehensive survey of the burial ground at St Brigid’s has been carried out and details including photos can be accessed by clicking here.

The burial ground at St Brigid’s has been closed for many years with the result that many Church of Ireland parishioners from St Brigid’s have been buried in the Quaker Sleeping Ground. The Sleeping Ground is not under the care of this parish and any further details about the Sleeping Ground, including burial records, are available from The Society of Friends, Ireland.

Burial Ground Fees and Regulations

The following fees are set by the Select Vestry of St Paul’s, Mountmellick in accordance with the Constitution of the Church of Ireland. All fees are received by the Rector or Churchwardens or such persons as they shall authorise and are expended in keeping the Church and burial ground in good order and repair, any surplus being used by the Select Vestry as it sees fit in accordance with the Constitution of the Church of Ireland.

Headstones

In accordance with the Constitution of the Church of Ireland, the Select Vestry of St Paul’s, Mountmellick grant the following permissions:

A headstone, of a regular and conventional shape, no larger than 36 inches by 28 inches may be erected at the head of the burial plot.
Inscriptions intended for any headstone must be formally approved by the Rector prior to the erection of any headstone in the burial ground at St Paul’s, Mountmellick. Inscriptions are to be reverent and seemly and shall be neither contrary to, nor indicative of any departure from, the doctrine of the Church of Ireland.

The following are prohibited by the Select Vestry of St Paul’s, Mountmellick in accordance with the constitution of the Church of Ireland:
No images may be inscribed on the headstone, text only is permitted.
No fixtures such as kerbs, railings, chippings, artificial flowers or any other item, fixture or structure may be placed on the burial plot.

General Regulations

  1. Plans for any erections on graves must be shown to the Rector and Churchwardens for approval before implementation. Any proposed inscriptions must be submitted in writing to the Rector for their approval. In all cases permission shall be given in writing by the Rector before work commences.
  2. Foundations to headstones must be adequate to support them. A minimum depth of 12 inches and width of 10 inches is required.
  3. On a double plot, should the headstone not be the full width of the plot, the headstone is to be placed in the middle at the head of the plot.
  4. Each person having a plot registered in his or her name, shall keep any erection thereon in good order or repair. Should any person fail to do so, within reasonable time of a written request to attend to such matters having been sent by the Rector and Churchwardens, may have the plot put in order to remove the offending parts at the expense of the party so neglecting.
  5. The Rector and Churchwardens will not be responsible for any loss, injury or damage, howsoever, caused which may happen to any erection built or placed upon a grave plot. The church reserves the right to remove any moveable objects during graveyard maintenance.
  6. The time of burial may only be arranged with prior reference to the availability of the Rector, and with the approval of the Rector. At least 48 hours’ notice of the time of burial must be given to the Rector.
  7. No burial may take place during the times of Divine Service, nor within an hour before or after the same.
  8. Cremated remains must be buried in a casket of wood or other biodegradable material. Ashes may not be scattered in the graveyard.
  9. Each single burial plot shall measure at least 8 feet long and 3 feet 6 inches wide. No coffin shall be placed closer to the surface than 3 feet measured from the top of the coffin. No new grave shall be located within 12 feet of the fabric of the church.
  10. The precise location of any new grave will be determined at the time of need by the Rector and Churchwardens provided that suitable space is available in the graveyard at such time.
  11. The planting of shrubs or bushes on the burial space is not permitted. The Rector and Churchwardens shall have the power to remove any bush, shrub or other form of growth which they consider to be detrimental to the burial ground or any of the graves.
  12. All floral, and other tributes, may be removed from the grave a reasonable time after the interment. Artificial wreaths are not permitted in the churchyard.

Coolbanagher

All fees are received by the Rector or Churchwardens or such persons as they shall authorise and are expended in keeping the Church and burial ground in good order and repair, any surplus being used by the Select Vestry as it sees fit in accordance with the Constitution of the Church of Ireland.

Headstones

The map and index of the burial ground at St. John’s, Coolbagher was researched and drawn up by Mr. Dawson Deverell in the late 1960s and has been kept updated by succeeding generations of parishioners.
